THE SPIRIT OF FEAR OF THE LORD.......Makes all the difference!

THE SPIRIT OF FEAR OF THE LORD

The Spirit of fear of the Lord is one of the seven spirits of the Lord mentioned in Isaiah 11:2-3. The Spirit, together with the Spirits of the Lord, Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Might, and knowledge were in operation in the life of our Lord when He was in the world, to the end that He had a quick understanding of all matters.

This Spirit is part of the Holy Spirit of God, and if we look at the illustrative description of the seven spirits of God, you will see that they are all the manifestations of the Holy Spirit.

The seven Spirits are represented by seven lamps or lights of God, they are also described as the seven lamps burning before the throne of God-Rev 4:5.  In Revelation 5:6, the seven spirits were described as the seven eyes.  So the Spirit of fear of the Lord is one of the seven spirits, lamps, and eyes of the Lord.

For a mortal man to love the Lord and fear Him, he would need the help of the Spirit of fear of the Lord working in his life.

A Divine Instruction

The topic of fear of the Lord is certainly an interesting one to Christians worldwide because, the fear of the Lord is a command God gave Jews on their way to the promised, so that they and their children may live long in the place they are going to purchase, but you need the help of the Spirit of God to fear the Lord and walk in His ways.

To say that a person is God-fearing connotes something about the person.  It means that you are someone others can trust in your judgment and opinion.  It means you have the Spirit of God working in your life.  For instance, it was because the midwives feared God that they obeyed Him instead of the authorities and spared the life of Hebrew babies (Exodus 1:17).

Moses chose leaders to help him on the basis that they feared God and wouldn't take bribes (Exodus 18:21) and fear of God is cited for many godly actions like treating older people with respect, dignity, and honour.  Treating elderly and disabled people with kindness, not showing discrimination between the rich and the poor are acts done in reverence to God.  The bible whoso mocks the poor mocks his creator and lacks wisdom.

The Lord was to add His voice to the matter when He said in Mathew 10:28 thus:  "Don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell".   Apostle Paul says to work toward complete holiness because we fear God (2 Corinthians 7:1).

What is the fear of the Lord?

The fear of the Lord is an awareness that you are in the presence of a holy, just, and mighty God, and that He will hold you accountable for your motives, thoughts, words, and actions. To fear God is to desire to live in harmony with His righteous standards and to honor Him in all that you do.

Christians should delight in God and love Him with all their heart.  We must choose to walk in the fear of the Lord. But, our selfish desires will hardly allow us to naturally move close to God to know Him and do His will.  That is what the Spirit of fear of the Lord does in our lives.

The Spirit helps us to walk according to the word of God in holiness and therefore naturally enjoy the friendship of the Almighty God.  It was David who prayed to God to teach him His ways, that he will walk in His truth: unite my heart to fear thy name” (Psalm 86:11).

Whenever you meet a person that fears the Lord, you can be sure that such a person would be kind and humble.  A man who keeps his words and treats others fairly and kindly.  A man that fears the Lord would treat other people as he would expect them to treat him and his children.

In fact, it is believed that lack of fear of the Lord is the reason for the increase in crime and all other forms of wickedness we are witnessing in the world today.  Romans 3:18 says the major challenge of man today is that we "have no fear of God at all".

To fear the Lord is to know the Lord, His Word, and His character.  Recognize that God is loving, merciful, and forgiven, and yet,  He is holy, just, and righteous.  His mercy and compassion go to those that fear Him and tremble at His word.  His friendship goes also to those that fear Him and he reveals great secrets unto them.

Manifestations of the Spirit of fear of the Lord

The Spirit of fear of the Lord is the Spirit that prompts and warns people each time they are entering into danger without knowing.  He reminds us of the scriptures on holiness and gives us quick discernment of what is good and evil, to enable a child of God to escape evil appearances.

When the spirit of the fear of the Lord is in operation in life, such a person will have a quick understanding of what is good and evil.  Have you heard brothers and sisters on the campus and elsewhere, talk about their courtship days, even up to one full year without any sexual encounter.  The two people were determined to keep their matrimonial bed holy and undefiled...It's the  Spirit of fear of the Lord at work in their lives.

During these periods, there will be no late-hour visits, no closed-door romantic gistings, and of course, no weekend sleep-over.  Why?  The Spirit of fear of the Lord will not permit them to indulge in careless behaviours, knowing that once they cross certain boundaries, sin will follow.

The Spirit reminds you of what God hates and warns you of the consequences of your actions.  The spirit reminds you that you are standing before the Lord and that God sees everything you are doing and nothing can be hidden from Him.

The Spirit of fear of the Lord reminds us of the important scriptures on holiness, without terrorizing us with them.  He helps us have a proper perspective of ourselves in relation to our God.  The Spirit helps us to consider the consequences of disobeying God, helping us to grow in the spirit.

DOINGS OF THE SPIRIT:

The Spirit helps us to understand the meaning of the following bible verses:

1. “Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the LORD all the day; for surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off” (Proverbs 23:17-18).

2. “The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death” (Proverbs 14:27).

3. “The fear of the LORD leads to life, and he who has it will abide in satisfaction; he will not be visited with evil” (Proverbs 19:23).

4. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction- Prov 1:7

5. The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate - Prov 8:13

6. And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’ - Job 28:28

7. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.  - Math 10:28

8. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever! - Psalm 111:10

9. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man - Eccl 12:13

10. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!- Psm 33:8

11. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death- Prov 14:27

12. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation - Luke 1:50

13. The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm - Prov 19:23.

14. The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant - Psalm 25:14

The fear of the Lord leads to divine protection and safety.  It is the fountain of life that turns one away from the snares of death.  With the fear of the Lord, there is riches, peace of mind and joy.  These are the deeper meanings of the words of holiness the Spirit of fear of the Lord interpret to Believers and motivate them to live a holy lifestyle and know the covenant of God.

The Spirit will teach believers to fear the Lord and hate evil, pride and arrogance. this is the spirit that will discourage believers from pursuing vanity or envying unbelievers whose destiny is not in Christ.  When the Spirit is active in your life, you will hate anything that does not come from the Lord, proceeds of corruption you will not touch, neither desire.

The Spirit teaches contentment, diligence and perseverance as virtues of holy living.  The Spirit working in a person makes him see things clearly as they are, and no one can easily deceive you or mislead you into error.  I believe the Lord is speaking to your heart now, to desire the help of the Spirit of fear of the Lord.  Don't resist the advice, pray to God for the Spirit of fear of the Lord to possess your heart and open your eyes and understanding about God's holiness standards.

Desire the Spirit of fear of the Lord, allow Him to help you

Nothing in the kingdom of God is achieved by power or individual might, but by the Spirit of the Living God.  If you want to make spiritually sound decisions all the time, you need the leading of the Spirit of God.

Whoever fears the Lord will have reverent to His holy name.  In Psalms 33:8-9, the bible says: “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere Him. For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm”

Christians who know the Lord and His ways understand that it is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God - Heb 10:31. He knows the Lord look unto those with humble and contrite hearts, people who listen, study and meditate on His word to do them.  Upon such people does He bestow enabling grace to succeed in life and ministry.

Moses experienced God in different ways and sought to know Him, and after fasting 40 days and nights he warned the people of Israel to run from the anger and wrath of God.  In Deut 9:19, he gave the jews important advice after fasting for 40days and nights on the mountain.

He says - “I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for He was angry enough with you to destroy you” (Dt 9:19).  Every Christian or believer should fear the anger and the wrath of God.

If by chance, you are afraid you don't know how to walk in the fear of the Lord, see what David said in Psalm 34 about learning to fear the Lord.   He says “Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

He offers three pieces of advice for all who wish to walk in the fear of the Lord.
He says to them:
1. Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
2. Depart from evil and do good
3. Seek peace and pursue it” (Psalm 34: 11, 13-14).

How will fearing God affect your life?

The fear of the Lord is far more than Biblical teaching, principle, or idea. It is relevant to our daily lives in many ways. Here are some of the things it makes us do:

1. Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.

2. Depart from evil and do good

3. Seek peace and pursue it” (Psalm 34: 11, 13-14).

4. Become obedient to His word and voice

5. To love the Lord with all our heart and trust in Him

6. To love the Word and study it daily and obey to do what it says

7. Draws us near to God with all the benefits of being a friend of God. Psalm 25:14

8. Cause us never to speak disrespectfully about God, no matter what happens - Job 1:1

9. Makes us honour the Word of God - God said "But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word" (Isaiah 66:2).

10. Makes us live a holy life - cleansing ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God" (2 Corinthians 7:1

11. Makes us obey the voice of God and do whatever God says - Gen 22:12

12. Makes us have respect for the Word of God - As an essential part of our life in Christ, an instrument for our change as we study, meditate and do the word.

Finally, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:13–14).

Conclusion

Finally, my beloved friends, Jesus is coming back very soon, to take believers into a life of peace and joy, without trouble and pains in paradise. If you will receive Him as your Lord and Saviour today, He will give you the power to succeed in life and make heaven at last.

For those who are considering whether to surrendering their heart to Him or not, I plead with them to do so without delay, tomorrow may be too late.

Shalom!
