THE STORY OF THE GIANTS........That built the Tower of Babel

CITY AND TOWER OF BABEL

Introduction

The interesting story of the city and the Tower of Babel is mentioned in Genesis 11 in just a few verses. The story has a lot of significance in the body of Christ and the world as a whole.

The descendants of Noah were living in the area of Mesopotamia in Babylon. They settled in a land named Shinar. The population was growing and they all spoke one language. The people decided to build a tall, proud symbol of how great they have become and to honour their gods. The Babylonians, led by Nimrod wanted a tower that would "reach to the heavens" so that they could prove something to God.

They started out with a basement that has many small shrines for their gods and when God saw what they were doing, He did not like the pride and rebellion in the hearts of the people. Not only that, but their rebellion was also clear and open with the building of shrines for other gods at the basement of the tower.

They were not done yet, they also built a sanctuary for their god, BelMerodach at the topmost platform of the tower. Nothing was mentioned about the Living God.  So, the Lord saw their rebellion and decided to come down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men were building.

He noticed that the people were one, and they have all one language, and with their unity of purpose, nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined doing.

Then, God said: Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. God caused them to begin to speak a different language, so they could not communicate and work together to build the tower.

The implication of Multiple tongues

The immediate implication of this confusion is that the children of Noah, all of them began to speak different languages and people speaking the same tongue or language gathered together and left to another place.  That was how the nations of the earth were distinguished by language, given that all of them were descendants of Noah after the flood.

If we are all descendants of Noah, it means that God created all races from the very beginning and they all worked together without issues until the language divide came to be from the Lord.

It is also true that the Nations and people that speak one language are able to take important decisions fast as a Nation than Nations with multiple languages.  Language gives a sense of oneness.

Tower of Babel
Who built the Tower

A close study of the bible in Genesis 11:1-9 revealed the language used by the builders of the city and tower were similar to the language used by God, when He came down to see what they were doing.  Go to - is a heavenly language that natural men did not know about, but, fallen angels knew it very well, thereby giving us the first indication that the tower was built by fallen and rebellious angels, the giants.

A Babylonian description of the tower of Babel discovered in 1876 indicates there were a grand court and a smaller one inside of which was a platform with walls about it, having 4 gates on each side.

In the centre stood the tower with many small shrines at the base dedicated to various gods.  The tower itself was 300 feet high with decreased width in stages from the lowest to the highest point of each square.  The top platform measuring 60 x 80 ft was a sanctuary for the god Bel Merodach and signs of the Zodiac.

The builders evidently finished the tower, for the work was stopped on the city only before they were scattered.  The account recorded that the language barrier impeded their work and they wept bitterly.  It concluded that the builders were supposed to have been 'Giants' who waged war with the gods, among whom was Nimrod, who himself was a hunter and mighty Warrior.

He was described as a hunter of men and animals, a tyrant, champion, giant or strong one, names and description used for giants renowned for wickedness those days.  Nimrod is called a 'mighty one' and the giants in Genesis 6:4 were called 'mighty men.

These are men who came out of the meeting between fallen angels and daughters of men, after the flood.  The Bible in Genesis 6:1-4 says: " The sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were fair, and they took them wives of all which they chose".  This evil happened before the flood and also after the flood.

Now to prove they were indeed giants, fallen angels and demonic creatures, look at their choice of language, the same as God's words. Let's look at the scriptures to notice the language I'm talking about:

Gen 11:1- 9
1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had them for morter.

4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

In verse 3 and 4 of Genesis 11, they use the word "Go to": And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had them for morter.  Again, they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

Those were the same words God used when He asked His angels to come with Him to the earth to see what the children of men were doing, indicating they tose giants knew the language of heaven, what natural people did not know.  They also predicted they were going to be scattered abroad upon the earth.

To prove that they were demonic men, they established many shrines at the basement for different gods and the topmost platform was also a sanctuary for a strange god, BelMarodach.  No mention was made about God in all their plans.

At the head of that rebellion was Nimrod, who build the first city in the bible and the first universal false religion opposing God after the flood.

That was why when God came down to see what was happening in Babel, He took action to counteract the rebellion of Nimrod, who was openly telling people not to ascribe their happiness to God, but to him, their great warrior. So, he became a great leader of the people those days.

CONCLUSION:

The story of the city and tower of  Babel is a simple reminder that man can do nothing without the hand of God to support him.  You may be able to start the project, but without His help, you may not be able to finish it.  Nimrod and his gang started their rebellion, but could not complete it.

I don't know the challenges facing you right now, I want you to know that God is ready to help you.  He knows everything and nothing is hidden from Him.  He will do for you what you cannot do for yourself when you repent of your sins and accept His son Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

He will transform your life from darkness to light, the light of God.  If you have not received the Lord, do it today, don't wait another day.  He will turn your sorrows to joy and write your name in the book of life.
