The 14 days Coronavirus lockdown announced by the government of Nigeria for Lagos, Abuja and Ogun States is billed to take off today. The announcement did not come as a surprise to many, the only surprise being that it is restricted to only three states.
On Sunday, March 29, President Buhari ordered a cessation of movement and closure of businesses in Lagos, Abuja and Ogun in the face of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic sweeping the world and the country.
The President said; “Based on the advice of the Federal Ministry of Health and the NCDC, I am directing the cessation of all movements in Lagos and the FCT (Abuja) for an initial period of 14 days with effect from 11pm on Monday, 30th March 2020. This restriction will also apply to Ogun State due to its close proximity to Lagos and the high traffic between the two states.
"All citizens in these areas are to stay in their homes. Travel to or from other states should be postponed. All businesses and offices within these locations should be fully closed during this period.”
Purpose for Lockdown
The purpose of the Lockdown is to curtail further escalation of the pandemic in the affected states. It will also give the authorities time to treat reported cases and arrest the pandemic. Speaking on the purpose of the lockdown says:
“We will use this containment period to identify, trace and isolate all individuals that have come into contact with confirmed cases. We will ensure the treatment of confirmed cases while restricting further spread to other states. “The NCDC (Nigeria Center for Disease Control) and the Lagos State Ministry of Health are working hard at ensuring confirmed cases get the best care possible.
What does this mean for you?
The Lockdown will affect all residents of the affected states, except those listed below.
It is necessary to allow extraordinary measures taken to close the spread of the pandemic across Nigeria. Lockdown has helped other cities to overcome the pandemic. So, it is important that people should cooperate and stay at home. Check the list below.

5. HAIRDRESSING SALONS AND BARBER SHOPS
6. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
BUSINESSES THAT WILL OPEN:
1. Pharmacy and other healthcare-related businesses.
2. Food processing, distribution and retail companies,
3. Petroleum distribution and retail entities,
4. Power generation, transmission and distribution companies and
5. Private security companies.
6. Petrol dispensing stations will run regular services as well.
7. SUPERMARKETS, SHOPS AND KIOSKS WILL BE OPEN!
