2023: Yakubu Gowon says Igbo presidency is welcome
Gen. Gowon

IGBO PRESIDENCY...Press Watch!

Introduction
The comment of General Gowon on the Igbo Presidency is one that cannot be ignored by the nation and its leaders.  Gowon's position in Nigeria is an enviable one because he led the nation to the three years of civil war that ended in 1967.

The civil war was fought to keep Nigeria united, and after 50 years, the Igbos should be allowed to add their dynamism to the nation's political and economic life.  My prayer is that the Igbo Presidency will happen during his time, that way the War reconciliation slogan of No VICTOR, NO VANQUISHED would have been fulfilled.

In 2015, the elder statesman was quoted as saying the Igbo Presidency will help heal civil war wounds - Metro March 25, 2015.  He said on Wednesday that an Igbo president would help heal the civil war wounds, maintaining that he supports the idea of rotational presidency

Gowon said this while delivering a lecture entitled “No Victor, No Vanquished: Healing the Nigerian Nation” to mark the 6th Convocation ceremony of the Chukwumeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, in Anambra.

He explained that the civil war was not out of hatred for the late Igbo leader Odumegwu Ojukwu or the Igbos, but was based on the principle of a commitment to a robust Nigeria.  “It is wrong to conclude that the civil war broke out following the failure of the Aburi Accord but was the direct result of a unilateral decision of independence for Eastern Nigeria...

The Elder statesman is one of the major voices the Igbos need to endorse their bid to once again be integrated into the Nigerian political mainstream.  Without any ambiguity, the Igbo Presidency will enhance the unity of the Nigerian state, and I believe the doubt and misgiving about the Igbos should have been laid to rest.

Politics is a game of number and the voice of Gowon is a credible northern voice as far as Nigeria is concerned.  The remaining northern endorsement will follow with time.  The target is unity and oneness of the country.  The major benefit of the Igbo Presidency is the sense of belonging it gives the people of the South East, as for whether the roads will suddenly become a paradise, time will tell.  Here is Gowon's comment made to BBC Hausa Service.

2023: Yakubu Gowon says Igbo presidency is welcome

Former military leader, Yakubu Gowon, says Igbo presidency is an acceptable idea - Gowon said a leader from the southeast could have emerged sooner if only the PDP had stuck with the rotational presidency - The retired military general, who oversaw the Nigerian civil war, believes that since any region in the country can govern, so can the southeast.

The bid of the southeast to produce the next president of Nigeria got a big boost when a former military leader of the country, Yakubu Gowon, gave the green light for an Igbo presidency. Gowon said: “If doing so will bring peace, it should be done; if the people so desire.” Gowon told the BBC Hausa Service in an interview that not only is the idea welcome, but it would also have come sooner if the rotational presidency system created by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had been adhered to.

Igbo presidency is currently a very popular political topic in Nigeria. Yakubu Gowon believes PDP's rotational presidency system could have produced an Igbo presidency sooner. Source: Depositphotos Gowon's words also came just days before Tanko Yakasai, an elder statesman, said the southeast region can produce a Nigerian president if it gets the support of other parts of the country, especially the north. Yakasai made the comment on Friday, January 17 during a TV appearance.

The remaining Elder Statemen

The remaining statement, whose endorsement will go along way to influence party flag bearers for 2023 election include General Badamosi Babangida, General and Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and the current President of Nigeria, President Buhari.

The three generals saw and participated in the civil war, and I believe the Igbo presidency happening in their days, would be an honour to them, that they saw the healing of Nigeria, which they fought to keep together.  Healing in every situation comes from the Lord. It is the Lord that put people in positions of authority and help Governments to fulfil the aspirations of their people.  Yes, it is God that allows governments to rule.

In the case of Nigeria, my prayer is that the healing will take place in the lifetime of these great leaders.  We need leaders with vision that will sustain what we have achieved so far, and move the country forward in Science and Technology, Engineering and manufacturing infrastructure, Agricultural processing etc.  We need a leader who will internalize the developmental role the CBN is playing in the economy, deepen it and spread entrepreneurial development across the federation.

We have a highly motivated Central Bank that understands what is needed to develop entrepreneurial skill, sponsor positive initiatives and raise tomorrows leaders in business and industry, they should not be abandoned, the government should harmonize and strengthen them.  This is the first time we have seen CBN leadership rise to this level in their development economics strategies.

Well done CBN, Fireinthebone is proud of your achievements so far!!

Back to Nigerian politics, there are many other influential politicians across the nations, whose influence cannot be ignored like Abdul Salam Abubakar, the 'Peace Maker' general of Nigeria, who has chaired Intra-parties reconciliation in Nigeria since the return to democracy in Nigeria.

The 'Peace-maker' General

His committee has done very well and his commitment to one Nigeria is great.  He has lived by example, as a former Head of State of this great country, standing for the truth and making sure there is peace during and after each election.

Politics is dynamic but the future is in the hand of God.  These men are mentioned because they are Elder statement who understands Nigeria more than many others. It is my prayer that they will see the emergence of an Igbo man as President of Nigeria and attest to all that the Igbo man is not a threat to the unity of Nigeria.

Let it happen guys.  It's a noble cause that will heal the nation and make us more united.  It is as noble as fighting to keep Nigeria One, and the political climate is also favourable for it now.  What is more, the Igbos like other tribes and nationalities has men who can move the nation forward.

What is needed is to pick one of the many competent leaders from the South East, not just because they are from South East, but because they are competent and have the patriotic and leadership capacity to lead Nigeria, then watch and see the wonder that grace will enable Nigeria to achieve.

I give God the glory for all these, God bless Nigeria.

I see celebration and joy across Nigeria, and it will not be long in Jesus name!
