Introduction

We have the liberty to choose what we eat, what we don't eat, and all the effort to nourish our body is a worthy investment in pursuit of happiness later in life.  If we abuse our body with junk food, drinks and beverages without control, it could amount to careless and unhealthy living.

The choice of food we eat regularly and the time we choose to eat have a strong influence on our weight, irrespective of the sex of a person.  With the exception of slim-built people, eating heavy food late in the night is an invitation to weight gain.

This could be worse for women due to their nature and metabolism.  The same type of food, be it rice, Yam, Eba and Egusi soup eaten in the afternoon will have minimal effect on your weight if you are a busy person in the office or market.

Weight control is key to healthy living because it ensures you are active in your duties, with the right energy to do your work effectively.  You are not too heavy and tired to carry out your duties, and so your productivity is high. 

The information in this piece is beneficial to both the old and young people,  so they can take their health and physical conditions in their own hands.  In this message, I intend to highlight the different foods that make people gain weight and their better alternatives.


Foods That Make You Fat
From the scriptures, the first food God recommended to man was fruits, in the case of Adam and Eve.  They were to eat of all the fruits in the garden, except one.  Fruits were the first food recommended for man.  (Gen 3:2-3). That is why they did not kill any of the animals in the garden with them, neither did they even thought of eating flesh.

But after the flood, when Noah offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, hundreds of years after the creation of man, that God gave man the authority to eat flesh, animal meat and fish and everything that creepeth on the earth, as well as vegetables - (Gen. 9:1-4) 

The addition of meat and vegetables into the food of man increased the choice of food that man has on earth.  It also introduced its own problem.  The problem of meat-related diseases, the processed and unprocessed red meat and its health implications.  Below here are 12 foods that could make a person add weight, with the Red meat, processed and unprocessed.

1. Potato chips
2. Rice served with beans, plantain and chicken
3. Other potatoes
4. Eba served with Banga Soup
5. Sugar-sweetened beverages like Milo, Bournvita etc
6. Pounded Yam served with Egusi Soup
7. Unprocessed red meats - Red meat from the market - Cow meat
8. Yam Portage prepared with fish and shrimps
9. Ice Cream of all kind
10. Processed meats like pork used in producing snacks etc
11. Meat Pies of all categories
12. Shawarma

Red meat - Unprocessed meat is a good source of certain nutrients, especially vitamin B-12 and iron. The human body needs these nutrients to produce new red blood cells. Red meat is also high in protein, which is necessary for building muscle, bone, other tissues, and enzymes.

However, eating red meat may increase a person's risk of developing heart disease or cancer. Red meat is referred to as muscle meat from beef, pork, lamb, goat, or other land mammals.

What is Overweight?

For health purposes, gaining a few pounds of weight may not be a problem, when you are actively engaged during the year.  But for you to know what weight is ideal for you, medical experts point to your body max index (BMI)  and your waist size in inches.

Body Mass Index
The BMI is one way to tell whether you are at a normal weight, are overweight, or have obesity. It measures your weight in relation to your height and provides a score to help place you in a category:
Normal weight: BMI of 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight: BMI of 25 to 29.9
Obesity: BMI of 30 or higher


Waist Size
Another important number to know is your waist size in inches. Having too much fat around your waist may increase health risks even more than having fat in other parts of your body. Women with a waist size of more than 35 inches and men with a waist size of more than 40 inches may have higher chances of developing diseases related to obesity.

Overweight may increase the risk of many health problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease etc

Avoiding Weight Gain With Age
Men and women should avoid weighty food as they advance in age because their work habit and schedule moves from physical activities to directing and monitoring the work of younger people.  No matter how you love a particular food, at a certain age in life, you are wise to eat only a small quantity of such food, instead of a full course.

For people who have gain excess weight already, drastic lifestyle change is recommended.  For Christians, I recommend regular fasting and eating less after the fast.  When you break your fast, try not to fight with heavy calorie foods to remain a strength, instead, understand that after fasting, when your body is light, what you need for strength is a cup of tea, then sleep briefly and rise up to regain back your strength.

If you cannot fast, then the foods listed below should be your eating lifestyle until you love it as normal.  Take salad and heavy fruits that give you energy like Banana and pineapples after taking vegetable and your strength will be back.

Problems of Overweight - HBP
One of the problems of overweight is high blood pressure.  High blood pressure is linked to overweight in several ways. Having a large body size may increase blood pressure because your heart needs to pump harder to supply blood to all your cells. Excess fat may also damage your kidneys, which help regulate blood pressure.

Every time your heart beats, it pumps blood through your arteries to the rest of your body. Blood pressure is how hard your blood pushes against the walls of your arteries. High blood pressure (hypertension) usually has no symptoms, but it may cause serious problems, such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

CONCLUSION
There are truly African food that can get you unwanted weight overnight if their consumption is not monitored and regulated.  

The foods listed above can help you regulate your weight and keep you healthy all year round.  If you are learning to eat only vegetable and fruits for the first time, always combine it with Banana and Pineapples, you will be amazed by how you can retain your strength and energy while eating vegetables.
