WHAT IS LOVE?.......What did the Bible say is Love?

What is love?

Love in the most basic sense of it, is the emotion felt and actions performed by someone concerned for the well-being of another person. Love involves affection, compassion, care, and self-sacrifice. Love originates from God.

Love can be described as the affection existing between people closely relates, friends and even strangers alike. The greatest source of human joy and pain is found in the four letter word LOVE.

A Poet once wrote "To love is to live, and to live is to love".  There is probably no other topic or issue has ever been discussed or debated and analyzed like LOVE.  Love seem to be everywhere, in the air - TV, internet, radio, in the books, movies and drama groups, yet only a few people understand the subject love, talk less of living it.

The western culture have over the years equated love with warm feelings, physical attraction and sexual activities.  This cultural definition of love is presented to us daily through the songs of Love we hear. the movies and television soaps we watch.  This is not the concept of Love the bible is talking about.

The western cultural definition of love is sensual, arising from physical features and beauty.  It can be driven up and down with physical make-up the woman is wearing and fastened by the images of people and their physical features,  In the years gone by, these were subject to magazines and books of interest.  But today, the movies industry, Television and the internet has taken over.

Loving is unique to the human experience of being an image-bearer of God.  Love originates from God Almighty, whom the bible said loved the world and gave His Son Jesus to die for the sin of the world.

Again Love is a known nature of God - For God is Love.  If God is love, it simply means that one cannot completely understand or comprehend the concept of Love, except perhaps to look at love from what the bible calls Love.

Love is presented in the bible as an emotion and an attitude of the heart.  Every relationship should start from the heart, love is not an exception.

God knew that love was not an easy concept and will not be for a world that has gone astray from His word. So God from the beginning commanded his people to love. They are to love Him with all their heart, soul and strength and they are to love one another.

LOVE IS A COMMAND:

Deut 6:5: -  5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

Lev 19:18: - You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Matt 5:43-47: -  "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'  But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

Matt 5:43-47: -  "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'   But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,  that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.   For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

Matt 22:37-40:  Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'   This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'    On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

There is love between man and God
There is love existing between close friends
There is Tribal love
There is Agape love

Brotherly love - The second type of love is the brotherly love that exists between close friends regardless of gender. There is no sexual connotation; it is the love for and by a friend. A good example is the love between David and Jonathan in 1 Samuel 20:17.

Tribal Love - Of family or tribal love, indicating a deep affection.

Agape - Finally, there is the Agape love, which is used to express the kind of love God demonstrates toward His elect. It is also translated as “steadfast love” or “lovingkindness.” A good example is found in Numbers 14:18, “The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression” (Numbers 14:18).

God’s agape love is why He never gives up on those He has adopted as His children. Throughout the Old Testament, God’s people repeatedly fell into idolatry and sin, yet He always preserved a remnant; He never gives up on His people. The reason is because of His agape love for them.

Agape love is the goodwill and benevolence of God shown in self-sacrifice and an unconditional commitment to loved one. Agape is steadfast, regardless of circumstances. Agape love is the kind of love we are to have for God in fulfillment of the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37).
