Effective Prayer, Spiritual Sacrifices.......And confronting the Enemy with Boldness!

1. The Efficacy of Prayer
2. What are Spiritual Sacrifices?
3. Effective Prayer - Makes our Fellowship with the Father Sweet!

The ability to prayer is one of the important skills and knowledge that a believer needs.  Talking to God in prayer deepens our relationship with Him and give us the boldness we need to walk in dominion.

When we walk in dominion, the reality of our salvation and Sonship is felt within.  That life of trust and dependence in God, continuous prayer and greater power with God becomes our experience.

There is hardly any greatness to be achieved in the work of God without a fervent prayer life.  Through prayer, strongholds are pulled down in our lives and the lives of others. Through prayer, we wage spiritual war against the powers of darkness and their agents and also, through prayer, we bring Jesus into the scene and miracles take place.

Prayer is the power that draw the hand of God down, it is through prayer we invite God into our churches, homes and individual situations.  If we refuse to pray, God will not have the legal ground to act on our behalf.

Through prayer we reverse, alter and change contrary decrees in the realm of the spirit, including curses, spells and divination made against our lives by the agents of the devil.  A believer who depend on God for direction and help will have to a prayer giant.

The bible is full of prayer giants whose prayer life was instrumental to their success as men and women of God.  We can see the story of Elijah in James 5:17, 18 to show that every believer can become  powerful in their prayer life.  Elijah was a man like any of us, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain because he was a prayer warrior in the will of God.

Even though God wanted to punish the people of Israel, He needed a man of prayer to declare His decision to the people and to follow through to the destruction of prophets of Baal and restoration of the people unto the true God.  Look at it this way, God needed a prayer warrior to pray earnestly and fervently for God not to bring rain, otherwise rain was already ordained to fall in its season.

God is a righteous God and would not stop rain from falling without an earnest prayer to that effect.  This means that Elijah would have gone to God in prayer with legal justifications for the rain not to fall in its season in the whole nation of Israel and causing the death of many people and animals.

Again, he prayed for rain to fall and the heaven gave rain and nourishment returned to the earth. This is a classical example of a prayer giant being a mighty  instrument in the hand of God.

All the blessings and provision the Lord has made for us are received by faith through our prayer.  As needs vary, so the type of prayer required vary.  Jesus taught his followers to ask and they shall receive, seek and they will find answers and knock and the doors will be opened to them.

We are today looking at:
  1. How to offer Spiritual Sacrifices unto the Lord
  2. Praying Effectively and the Benefits
  3. The concept of Brokenness and Spiritual Power.

Believers are Royal Priests unto God.

As royal priests, our sacrifices should go up to God daily!
His blood cleanses us of all unrighteousness.
We are the Temple of the Holy Ghost and Christ lives in us.

We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, chosen that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.  This means we should be offering spiritual sacrifices unto God on the daily basis.

We were once not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy...to do what?.

We have obtained mercy to live differently from the world and to always praise the Lord.  To live as strangers and pilgrims, and to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.  To always have our conversation honest among the people of all classes, so that, whereas they speak against us as evildoers, they may by our good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

We have also obtained mercy through His sacrifice at the cross to be good citizens of our respective countries, to submit ourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme, or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

As a royal Priesthood, we are priests of the Most High God, believers in Christ, and the Tabernacle of God.  Jesus Christ lives in us through the Holy Spirit and as such we have no need to go to Jerusalem in search of Solomon's temple to pray.

We are the temple of the Holy Ghost, separated unto His praise and worship and to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable unto God.

Briefly, what are spiritual sacrifices?

Any of the following offered to God in faith and love can be a spiritual sacrifice made to God.

1. Prayer - We are to pray without season - daily.  When all is well with us and when we are facing challenges.  However, we must remember some of the rules as follows:
  • Whatever things you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them and you shall have them - Mark 11:22-24.  This is the rule 1.  Believe first and then you will receive.
  • When you stand praying - Forgive those that have offended you and those having any ought against you, quickly go and make peace with them, so that your heart is free from offense, which hinders your answers without you knowing.  That is Rule 2.
  • Pray according to His will and promises.  This means that we should know the will of God concerning many issues we are praying about, so we can order our prayers right. It also means that we should be familiar with His promises to us, so that when we begin to pray, we ask Him to bless us according to His promises - Rule 3.
2. Fasting - Especially Intercessory fasting - As Temples of God, our body is a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God.  We are in the best position to pray and fast for ourselves and others, including the church because the scriptures say the fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

When we wait on the Lord for the Church of God and its activities, when we intercede for souls, when we pray for the saved souls to be firmly established in Christ, we are offering spiritual sacrifices.

3. Praising God Regularly - When we praise Him for His goodness, help and generosity over our lives and others, we are offering sacrifices unto God

4. Worship - This is another aspect of spiritual sacrifices unto Him.  When we worship the Lord and adore Him openly for who He is to us and the Church and the world, when we give special seed offering for kingdom advancement works, when we worship Him with our substance, especially when God directs us to sow seeds even to people or the church, it could be money or property or even our talent and time, if we obey and do the assignment quickly, it is a spiritual sacrifice.

5. Others - There are many other actions we take that constitute spiritual sacrifices unto God like supporting the saints, raising other peoples children etc.  May the Lord expand this in your heart in Jesus Christ name.

  • Knowing how to pray effectively is one of the first and primary skills a believer  should acquire.
  • Believers who cannot pray effectively and continually will end up in frustration.
  • Believers who cannot pray effectively will have problem fulfilling their destiny in Christ

Prayer is the key to successful walk with God and whosoever possess the power of prayer becomes a mighty instrument in the hands of the Almighty.

The aim of most of our prayers to God is to be blessed, but there is more to prayer than blessing.  Through prayer, we lift up our earthly burden unto God , asking for His mercy and intervention.  Through prayer, we intercede for friends in need, nation and more importantly, through prayers, we change situations we do not like in our lives.

The principles of effective prayer remains the same irrespective of the challenges and tough times we experience. Our Saviour, Jesus laid the foundation for prayers in His days and if you will examine Mathew 6:9, Mathew 7:7,9, you will observe three levels of prayer.

We cannot see God, but through prayer, we come boldly enter into the presence of the Father and ask for help in times of need. Also, as royal priesthoods, joint heirs with Christ, the power and ability to decree a things and it is established unto us depends so much on the fellowship we have with the Father, our faith in Him and our continuous praises, worship and Thanksgiving we render unto the Most High God.

So, prayer and ability to pray effectively is a skill every believer should develop and practise daily to enjoy his or her daily living.  In looking specifically at how to pray effectively, it is very important that each time we pray, our request agrees with what is in our heart. Your prayer should be from the heart, otherwise such a prayer may never be answered.

It is because of the crucial role prayer play in the life of a believer that prompted this piece on Effective Prayer and many more that will come on the topic.  I hope it will bless readers.

Some of the basic requirements for effective prayer include:

Basic Requirements

1. Faith: - In Mark 11:22-26 -  Jesus answered and said to His followers, "Have faith in God.  For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.  This means that you should believe that you have whatsoever you say, especially when you believe before starting your prayer. You should believe before you start praying.

2. Relationship: - Another basic for answered prayers is the kind of relationship you have with the Lord.  When a believer has the right relationship with the Father, then praying and praising God is always a sweet experience.  When you have the right relationship with God as a child of God, you know that your Father will hear your prayers and when He hears your prayer, He will answer.

A Father and son relationship means that whatever things you ask when you pray and believe that you receive them, you will eventually have them. But when there is no relationship with the Father or if the relationship is not solid, there will be doubt, whether the Father will hear the prayer at all. When a believer has a good relationship with the Father, there is no longer doubt.

3. Forgiveness: - In addition to having faith, Jesus advised us further to forgive people who have offended us. In Mark 11:25-26, Jesus says  "And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.  But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses."

How to make your Prayer Effective:

Prayer is a two way communication between the Almighty God and man.  A believer’s prayer life should be based and built upon the word of God, the same for his prayer life.  Prayer should be offered to God with the hope of answers. Jesus said we should ask, seek and knock for anything we need.  If we seek, we’ll find, ask and it shall be given and knock the doors of heaven, it shall be opened to us.

The following steps will make your prayers effective and fruitful:

1.     Make Specific requests with scriptural backings:

Every time you stand to pray, make sure your requests are specific and clear. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, give me a brand Honda Jeep car for my family, an accommodation in Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja; Father, please give me a Laptop computer. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I join my hands with my wife to ask for a baby boy.  Be specific.

2.      Pray According to the Word

We cannot over-emphasize the importance of the Word of God in the life and prayer of the believer.  Faith begins when the will of God is known and we know that God’s Word is His will. When you are asking God for a godly woman to marry, then locate the scriptures that talked about virtuous woman, the scripture that say it is not good for a man to be alone etc. Look for the bible passage promising your request. Make it a point of duty to pray with a scripture backing up your request. If the scriptures did not promise the things you are desiring, you need not proceed with the prayer until you find a scriptural backing.

3.      Use the Word of God to fight the devil

When it is a deliverance case, when you are tormented by demons or human agents – be focused on the victory Christ gave you through His blood at the cross.  Use the Word of God, Blood of Jesus, Fire of the Holy Ghost to fight the devil.  Remember that Jesus used ONLY THE WORD OF GOD to defeat the enemy.  It is written, It is written.  Use the word of God to prevail over the devil and his agents.

4.      Be Positive in your thinking – Be Expectant

Receiving from God is by faith and in the matter of faith, doubt is excluded.  Whenever you pray, without doubting anything, your answer will surely come.  After you have prayed in faith according to God’s word, do not entertain any doubt or thought of not receiving answers, rebuke every such thought.  Jesus said, when you pray, believe you have receive your answer before you see it manifest, then you are saying you believe the Word of God and such faith moves God.

So, after praying, guide your mind against every contrary thought, thoughts that bring doubt about God’w word or God’s ability to answer.  We must cast down evil imaginations and every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God.

5.      See Yourself with your Answer

If you were to pray for your healing, after the prayer begin to see yourself well and going about your business.  See a new pictures of yourself doing what you couldn’t do when your sick. Continue to meditate on the word of God promising you healing and see yourself in possession of what you have asked from God in prayer.

Beloved, never allow the Word to depart from your heart, eyes and mouth after prayers, else if the word of God depart from you, you may not see the manifestation of your heart desire because God moves and works  in line with His words.

6.      Give God thanks for your answer

Give God praise and adoration due Him for His mercies and blessing in the years past and for the specific things you are requesting through prayer.  Lift up your heart and mouth and praise Him daily and continue to praise Him for the answer to your prayers.  Don’t wait until you receive your answers before you praise and worship God for prayers answered.  The biblical principle is that you believe and confess that you have received what you are asking for…and then the answer will manifest.

7.      Pray without season

We are to pray without season - daily.  When all is well with us and when we are facing challenges.  However, we must remember some of the rules as follows:

Whatever things you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them and you shall have them - Mark 11:22-24.  This is the rule 1.  Believe first and then you will receive.

When you stand praying - Forgive those that have offended you and those having any ought against you, quickly go and make peace with them, so that your heart is free from offense, which hinders your answers without you knowing.

Pray according to His will and promises.  This means that we should know the will of God concerning many issues we are praying about, so we can order our prayers right.

The Person Praying

The person praying to God for help and deliverance should settle certain issues in his life like:

1.      You should deal with sin – for God hate sin.  Stay away from sin and all sinful acts and thoughts, so that your prayers are not hindered.  Sin will prolong your suffering.

2.      Tell God the truth, no hypocrisy – for He knows all men.

3.       Give up every secret sin in your heart (Psalms 66:18).  That sin you hide to enjoy will hinder your prayer and reduce you to a morsel of bread before God.  Give it up now!

4.      You should have faith in God and His Word and demonstrate this faith openly. Mark 11:24

5.      Forgiving the people who offend you is one of the conditions for your prayers to be answered.  You must forgive all offence; even the offence of your enemies also.

Receiving From God

1.      Faith is at the center of receiving from God. He is ready to release all that your faith can obtain.

2.      When your request gets to God, He is looking to see your faith in His ability to answer the prayer. Some people brought a sick man to Jesus in Luke 5:18-20, He did not bother with the faith of the sick man, but the faith of the men that brought him.  When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the sick man “Thy sins are forgiven thee”.

3.      Your faith determines what you get from God.  It can heal your Mother, brothers and sisters, living miles away from you.  Your faith is demanded in your walk with God.

Beloved, there is nothing more important for your salvation, spiritual growth and maturity than Knowing the Almighty God.  Begin today to have quality time studying the Word of God.  It is in knowing Him, that your blessing and joy, even peace of mind comes.
