Former President Jimmy Carter on Monday said President Trump's decision to nominate John Bolton as national security adviser is the "worst mistake" he has made since assuming office 14 months ago.

“I have been concerned at some of the things he's decided. I think his last choice for national security adviser was very ill-advised. I think John Bolton has been the worst mistake he's made," Carter told CBS "This Morning" co-host Norah O'Donnell in an interview taped in New York on Monday.

Trump hopes to replace H.R. McMaster with Bolton, which would make him the third person in this position since January 2017. Michael Flynn first held the role.

Last week, Carter, a Democrat, offered to help the Trump administration ahead of its meeting with North Korea later this year.

The 93-year-old humanitarian said he could help the White House and State Department when they sit down to discuss North Korea's testing of ballistic missiles in recent years.

"And I understand what they want and need," Carter said last Friday. "And just this week – I had a representative from the White House who came down and gave me the latest developments with North Korea."

Carter said he is willing to travel overseas on behalf of the White House.

In 1994, Carter traveled to meet with leaders of North and South Korea and declared that the crisis concerning North Korea's nuclear weapons was over. His diplomacy, which caught the Clinton administration off-guard, led to a deal that granted concessions to North Korea while it continued its nuclear program.
