The question of proper dress for women has been of interest to many people foy years.

God's guidelines in the bible for dressing are general, but very clear. God expects Christian women to dress in "modest apparel, with propriety and moderation (discretion) — that is, in clothes that are not necessarily flamboyant but smart.

A Christian woman should not be an "exhibitionist" in attracting undue attention to herself by wearing clothing that is provocative, suggestive, or outrageous.

By the same token, this does not mean that Christian women should wear rags and look drab, colorless, or tasteless. A Christian is to be a light to the world (Matthew 5:14-16), an example of balance and good taste.

We should not be so out of step with the fashions of society that we stand out like the proverbial "sore thumb." Clothes can be fashionable without being immodest or peculiar. Apparel should be appropriate for the occasion—decent swimsuits for the beach, jeans for yard work, and usually a dress or other nicer outfit for special occasions. A Christian woman should especially strive to look nice for her husband and family.

Two passages in the New Testament concern proper dress for women:

But the modern woman careless about the scriptures when it comes to dressing.  Many of them just feel they cannot be less-dressed than the worldly women.  When we take topics like this, we are only asking for modesty in appearance for our Sisters who are always the object of attraction in the churches and even in society.

Any time you hear purity, it applies to your heart, spirit, soul and body.  Your body is God.s own as you were purchased with the costly blood of Jesus Christ.  So, briefly we want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, and then earn their respect and admiration of all people. 1 Timothy 2:9-10

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. 1 Peter 3:2-5

It is important that we are in control of our appearance and that we are not dressing to please our friends and other people, but women should dressing to be comfortable and smart.  Women do not need to dress to be like other people, but make sure the dressing is one that gives her dignity and respect.

The Bible encourages us to focus more on the inner self and less on our outward appearance with the following scriptures:

1. “Women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing.
2. “Let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit.” (1 Peter 3:4)
3. “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” (Colossians 3:12)
4. “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” (Proverbs 31:25)

Christian women should dress in a way that reflects their positive self-worth, letting their light shine for all to see.  “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket… in the same way, let your light shine before others.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

The Lord encouraged us not to love the world and the things in the world and it has the capacity to divert us away from the things of God and depending on God.  Instead, focusing on the world would make us focus on our personal achievement and worldly wisdom.

“Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything you see that is good. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.” (1 John 2:15-17)

A women should therefore find her individual balance between trend and tradition, spending and thrift, and when she finds that balance, the clothes she wear will be with dignity and honour and a blessing to the society.

Beloved, the time is short and we should hand over everything we do and speak, let us do as unto the Lord.  Let us be guided by the Word of God as a standard and let us daily review our standing in Christ, confessing our sins, errors and mistakes daily.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!
