Igbo supported me more than people of Niger Delta while I was president – Jonathan

This statement reminds me of a time when the creation of additional state in the South East,  which would bring the South East at par with other regions in the country with six states each, was the most urgent marginalization issue.

TODAY, No one seem to remember the state creation issue.  We know that state capitals are probably the most developed in every state and when a new state is created, at least the state capital will be transformed in a matter of years.

The statement of Ex-President Jonathan reminds me of the issue as it was contentious then.  Top of the marginalization mantra is the fact that the zone remains the only zone with five states, whereas the North West boasts of seven states and the other zones have six states each.

The President was not elected during that particular election, but what happened to the clamour for an additional state.  From no where the agitation for Biafra emerged and the state creation issue died.  I think the South East need one additional state and that will increase the pace of development in that area of the region.

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, former president on Thursday said he enjoyed more support from the South East than his region, South South when he was in power.

He made the disclosure in Onitsha, Anambra State during the grand finale of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship campaign candidate in Anambra, Oseloka Obaze.

Jonathan urged Nigerians to collectively defend and stand firm for democracy.

The former president applauded the people of the South East, saying, “I got more support from the South-East than I got from the South-South where I come from”.

He said, “We must collectively defend democracy in the country because no matter what you are, until you are able to elect your leader peacefully, the international community will not take you as developed society.

“Where elections are manipulated, there is no election. We use this opportunity to mobilise all Nigerians, especially the people of the state to stand firm for democracy and to do everything to protect democracy.”

Recall that the former President also said Anambra had remained a PDP state since the beginning of democracy in 1999 till date.

The former president had also said 80 per cent of the people were still members of the party.
