Introduction
Truly, a born again child of God has all the power of heaven vested in him to operate in the supernatural, but he has to grow and develop his spiritual understanding and knowledge of God and His ways. The supernatural is essentially the operation of the Holy Ghost promoted by faith. If a person knows the Lord and believe in Him, miracles, signs and power will freely accompany that person.
Without faith, you cannot operate in the Supernatural. In Romans 10:17, the bible says - So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. And without faith, it is impossible to please God, for whoever would draw near to Him, must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Without faith, you cannot call those things, which be not, as though they be, it is done by faith. Faith is highly needed to operate in the supernatural, And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
Operating in the Supernatural
From what we can see in the scriptures, you can decide to operate at a higher spiritual level and God will permit it if you are willing to pay the spiritual price. Elisha made a choice to operate at a higher dimension of the supernatural ministry of Elijah. He asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit and Elijah told him the price, he would have to pay for such power to manifest in his ministry. He says to him, if you can see me when I am being taken away, you shall receive your request.
Any man called by God has to make a choice whether to operate in a supernatural ministry or not. Ministry without the power of God is empty and a waste of time this end-time. Philip could not have succeeded in taking over Samaria from the hold of the magicians, sorcerers, witches and wizards that had entrenched themselves in the land of Samaria and had taken people captive, without the power of God. Without supernatural manifestation and deliverance of people from demonic oppression, the deception of Satan and his witchcraft spirits would not have been overthrown.
This choice made Elisha pursue the anointing with great determination and sacrifice. There is always a price to pay in receiving the anointing of God. One must be ready to totally surrender to God and His righteousness, and must be ready to be committed to the study of the word of God, and being a faithful doer of the word, and given to soul winning, helping the needy, fasting and prayer. The supernatural answers to studying the Word and praying. In the early church, the Apostles were led by the Spirit of God to make a declaration in Acts chapter 6, that they will give themselves continually to prayer and the ministry of the word.
The supernatural ministry brings progress and breakthroughs, without which there will be stagnation and murmuring. In Joel 2, God promised to pour out His Spirit in the last days upon all flesh. That means that God is ready to release His Spirit on all His children for both edifications and to raise end-time generals who would walk intimately with Him to rescue and deliver millions of people held captive in the camp of Satan.
Whether we like it or not, there is already a great hunger for the prophetic because of the activities of powers of darkness. The devil and his agents are on the rampage, targeting men, women and children to initiate or kill. They’re doing everything possible to undermine the word of God and the truth.
Requirements
To operate in the supernatural, you need a lot of understanding of the things of God and of the spirit. You need faith, the name of Jesus Christ and the Spirit of Christ - The Holy Spirit. These three keys are the same keys needed to overcome in all spiritual battles. Talking about the supernatural, it is the ability to bring the Master Jesus Christ into the scene whenever we pray. The minister should:
1. Seek His presence.
The more you stay in His presence, the more of His grace and power that will manifest in your life and ministry. Moses told the Lord that if you will not go with us, we will go nowhere. His presence makes the difference! So, it is your duty to study the Word and meditate on it, pray and fast enough, that will make heaven know your name and voice.
You should know the person of the Holy Spirit and do everything to obey Him and let Him lead and direct you. Doing the things that please the Lord is another way to earn the backing of God. Live a righteous life and avoid anything that grieves the Holy Spirit.
2. Have strong faith
Faith is born from the revelation of the word, from hearing the Word of God. Faith is born and developed by divine encounters and personal experiences we have on a daily basis. When you know how powerful the Lord is, or the saving and deliverance power in His name, you will have more faith. You must love and embrace the Word of God, meditate on it daily to know your Lord and Saviour and as you eat the spiritual food in the Word, life and faith in building up in your heart. Deep your mind and spirit in God’s Word by constantly setting your thoughts on it and the revelation of truth will produce supernatural faith in your heart.
3. Walk the faith
The Bible tells us, that “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:20). The power of God is released to help people in diverse conditions receive the touch of God that turns their situation around, so you must learn to speak the word you believe in your heart and stand by it. You also have to ask the Holy Ghost always to tell you what to do and be ready to obey him. Without acting your belief, nothing will change, nothing will happen. You are the vessel through whom the power flows, so don’t allow yourself to get discouraged. Stay focused and tenacious. No matter what you see, stay focused, looking unto Christ alone. Never look at the physical conditions of the person, rather look to the Big God behind you and His words you are speaking, which cannot fall to the ground.
4. Pray and fast regularly.
In Matthew 17:14-21, Jesus said unbelief, fasting and prayer were the reasons why the disciples could not deliver the epileptic boy. The disciples couldn’t cure him, but Jesus did. It wasn’t a question of God’s will, but the availability of power on the part of the disciples. The Lord says “this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (v. 21). Prayer and fasting help to release God’s faith within us.
5. Be sensitive in the Spirit
To operate in the supernatural we must develop a keen sensitivity to the person of the Holy Spirit. God doesn’t work the same way all the time, and we need to hear His direction for each situation. Consider Jesus. He saw signs and wonders on a consistent basis in His daily life, but He never prayed the same way twice. Sometimes He laid hands on people; sometimes He instructed them to take a specific action; sometimes He did unusual things Himself such as spit in mud and put it into a person’s eyes. He was unconventional but completely Spirit-led. The key is He did only what He heard from the Father. So, you too must be able to hear from heaven and be guided accordingly, if the supernatural would manifest in your life and ministry.
Jesus spent time praying and fasting always and His ability to hear and see the actions of His heavenly Father came out of the time He spent with Him in prayer and communion. If you want to sensitize your spiritual eyes and ears, you must put yourself in a place where you can see and hear God. This will often require you to go to the mountain or other quiet places, far from human distraction to fast and pray. If you can do this regularly, surely you will testimonies to share about God's power.
6. Be motivated by love.
Love must be the foundation for everything you do. Without it, power can lead to pride and self-inflation. Love is the greatest manifestation of God’s power. It was because of love that Jesus walked in total obedience. It was because of love that the power of sin and Satan were defeated. Love is what motivates our faith.
Love is what causes us to live in the Spirit. Romans 13:10 KJV “Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law”. Love is the greatest virtue of all. Without faith, you can’t please God. But without love, you can’t know Him at all. Love is the nature of God in us that makes us extend help and kindness to others. Without love, the prophetic grace will be used for money-making and to help your friends, but with love, the grace you carry is for everybody, whether friends or foes. Love destroys offence, disunity, love conquers all.
What is the Secret that brings Christ to the Scene?
1. You must be born again, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
2. You must be born by the Word – It is the word of God that recreate you to become new in Christ. This is why Apostle Paul said, “Know you not that you are born by the word”?. The renewal of your mind is by the Word of God and so if the word of God is not inside of you while you are professing to be born again, you cannot operate in power.
3. Prayer - A man of God is usually a man of prayer because of our desire for His guidance and other needs, we pray to God always. It is by prayer that we communicate our challenges, petition and requests to God. So, if the Word is inside of you and you are prayerful, you can easily operate in the power of God.
If you have the word of God, but have no time for prayer, probably because of your work or business schedule, the enemy cannot harass you, but you are limited by the level of power you can operate.
What about the Miraculous?
Now follow me closely..., don’t miss this point - if you have the word and you are very prayerful as a believer, you are such a blessed believer to admire. But if you have the Word, and pray with faith....the door to the supernatural opens to you. You will see supernatural healings, creative miracles and almost anything you ask for.
Remember what Jesus answered Martha John11;40 - "Said I to thee, that if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God" If you have absolute faith in Master Jesus Christ and in God, and His word is inside of you nothing shall be impossible for you. Jesus is the Key that opens the doors of the supernatural. He is the Word, the Resurrection and life, the Bread of life, the Beginning and the End. By Him, you have unrestricted access to the supernatural.
You know that anyone that will walk with God and operate in the supernational must run away from sin and be a holy vessel unto the Lord. You will be shocked that you have the word from Genesis to Revelation, you pray continuously and you also have faith and yet you cannot operate in power, because on one secret sin you have refused to let go.
To operate in power and do the supernatural, holiness is required…..Holiness in your spirit, soul and body. Holiness in your thoughts and conversation. The words that proceed out of your mouth must be few and seasoned with grace. You must be holy even in your appearance, choices and decisions. This simply means that you have hatred for sin and flee at every appearance of sin. It also means that you have yielded everything about you, including your finances unto the hand of God and you are willing and ready to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in all things.
Beloved, God cannot walk with a goat….He prefers a sheep that is obedient, humble and lowly. If you are His own, He will cater for you and even the things that concern you. This is why wise believers hold nothing back from God. Do not hold anything back from God. Sin and unbelief stand as a barrier between man and God.
Obstacles to the Supernatural
There are reasons why people do not operate in a supernatural ministry. Some of these are identified below:
1. Fear
Jesus said to His disciples: "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you”- Luke 10:18-19. This power is all-encompassing. Jesus has given us power over every problem including sickness, but unfortunately, many believers are operating in fear and managing what they should expel from their lives.
Recently, I asked a brother who said he had an ulcer, to fast and pray for three days with water and the ulcer would leave him, but his countenance fell. He is not used to fasting and according to him. According to him, an ulcer patient cannot skip or forgo food and I told him that fear and unbelief was the problem. He needed to exercise his faith in the word of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ at the Cross. This brother could not and so he walked away to continue treating the ulcer. Rather than look unto Christ his healer, he was looking to drugs and prescriptions of Doctors.
2. The desire for the Supernatural
The bible says blessed are those which do hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled - Mathew 5:6. This scripture is true to operating in the supernatural. You will have to thirst and hunger for it with a good intention, to serve the Lord with it, sin more souls through it and bring glory to the name of the Lord through the supernatural. Anything other than genuine desire and hunger for it, the grace may never come.
There has to be continual longing for God and His presence, which will bring more of His grace and anointing upon a man to do the supernatural. This hunger continues throughout your ministry. Thirst and hunger is the oil that fuels the supernatural flow of power, any time that hunger dries up, His presence will also be absent and the miracles will cease. That was why Apostle Paul said in Philippians 3:12-16: "Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Nobody has apprehended, so you have to continue to press towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus according to Apostle Paul. You must keep desiring more of His presence and power and never have confidence in your flesh or ability - Philippians 3:13-14
3. Pride
Pride of achievement is one terrible malaise that trouble ministers with prophetic grace. The devil would always want to deal subtly with them by making them feel they are the miracle worker themselves, which is a lie. Only Jesus Christ is. So, all kind of pride, arrogance, exaggerated self-confidence, self-indulgence are obstacles to operating in the supernatural. God cannot share His glory with man, and He is not a respecter of persons and so, the Lord must be feared and reverenced all the time. All honour and glory go to Him alone, and the moment a servant of God loses sight of these points, he is heading for a fall, God forbid it for you and me.
Consider the words of Apostle Paul concerning his service in the vineyard of God. He says: "“And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway”.
4. Lack of Prayer and intercession
There is a saying that without prayer, there is no power; and the more prayer you can say, more power you will experience. Effective prayer life is an indispensable requirement to operate in the supernatural. Most of the time Jesus will withdraw from the crowd to a solitary place in order to commune with God. That kept Him connected with the Father and the power of God.
Lukewarm and prayerlessness will spell disaster for any minister that operates in the supernatural. This is because the enemy does not rest, they constantly monitor such a minister to see when he is weak in the spirit and attack him. Remember the scriptures in Luke 18:1, which says: “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint”
5. Wrong company
Having the wrong people in your boat or moving with the wrong company of people can only result in frustration and setbacks. This is an issue for both the Minister and the congregation. Your associations can either promote your vision and grace or limit it. So many people start well with God and later derail because of wrong people and wrong advice they received.
If you think you can operate in the supernatural as Christ did without sharing from His sufferings, you are joking. Apostle Paul posited it correctly when he said in Phil 3:10 "That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings being made conformable unto his death". If you will operate in this realm, be ready to lose unhelpful friends and companies. Elisha has to part with the sons of the prophet in Bethel, Jericho, and Jordan to be able to follow Elijah to the place, where the power came upon him. People who are not taking their relationship with Christ serious cannot be your friend if you want to get and retain the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion
In conclusion, do not be deceived, the supernatural will not answer to a baby Christian. You must love the Lord, study and meditate on His word and obey them. The gift of righteousness has been given to you to enable you to walk in holiness and fulfil your destiny. So, grow up, rise above the baby Christian, still drinking milk and complaining.
