Introduction

The word 'abomination' is one that evoke fear in the mind of some believers.  In abomination, God clearly mentioned and described some misconducts that are not acceptable before Him.

When we examine the Greek and Hebrew words translated “abomination” in Scripture, we see that these words have very definite implications. Abomination is used exclusively to describe things that are disgusting, loathsome and absolutely intolerable—things that are unacceptable to God.

Christians would do well to take note of what God labels abominations. Such things, be they actions, attitudes or objects, have no place in the life of a follower of Jesus Christ.

What is an abomination?

An abomination is something that causes hate or disgust. In biblical usage, an abomination is something that God loathes or hates because it is offensive to Him and His character. Abomination is whatever God calls abomination.  It is very important that man recognize that whatever God call abomination is abomination.  Many times, abominable acts are associated with witchcraft, sexual perversions, idol worship and ritual sacrifices.

Occult practices are also called an abomination in Scripture, so is child sacrifice (Deuteronomy 18:9–12; 20:18; 2 Chronicles 28:3). Other abominations in God’s sight are ungodly sexual relationships like homosexuality and adultery, cross-dressing (Deuteronomy 22:5), dishonest business dealings (Deuteronomy 25:13–16) etc.

Most of the references to that which is abominable or detestable come in God’s Law in Leviticus and Deuteronomy, in prophecies declaring God’s judgment against Israel, and in Proverbs. Proverbs 6 contains a list of seven things that God calls an abomination: “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers” (Proverbs 6:16–19).

In Luke 16:15 Jesus tells the Pharisees, “What is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God”. Titus 1:16 says that false teachers may “claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.”

From idolatry to unfair scales to ungodly sexual relationships to wickedness of various kinds, abominations separate people from God. Really, all sin are not abomination, but all sin separates us from God and is detestable to Him. God’s hatred of sin makes Christ’s sacrifice on the cross all the more remarkable. It was at the cross that “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

As He suffered and died for our sin, Jesus could identify with the psalmist: “I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people” (Psalm 22:6). Jesus took our abominations upon Himself and gave us the gift of His righteousness in return. All who put their trust in Him will be saved.

Many people who commit abominable acts can be said to be “ungodly” as those who are separated from God. Ungodliness is the condition of being polluted with sin. They act in a way that is contrary to the nature of God, they oppose God and His word, and with their heart hardened in their disobedience, they have an irreverent disregard for God.

Some of the most notable abominations before God include :

1. Dishonesty.
2. Arrogant pride
3. Ignoring God’s law
4. The act of homosexuality.
5. Devising evil and sowing discord
6. Eating what the Bible calls “unclean” animals.

Conclusion:
The book of Revelation clearly stated that God is preparing for His people, “There shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life” (Revelation 21:27).

In the new life that God is preparing for us, there will be no room for abominations. If we want to be a part of that Kingdom, now is the time to look to God and, with His help, rid ourselves of the things that could keep us out.

The bible says in Romans 1:26-27 - For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. Check Romans 1:18 down to the end for the state of people that reject the word of God. other references to sexual perversion in the bible are as follows:
